ISO 9001:2026 is now the current edition of ISO 9001, the world's most widely used standard for quality management systems. It replaces ISO 9001:2015.
If your organization is already certified, there is no need to start again. ISO gives certified organizations three years to move to the new edition, and most quality management systems will need targeted updates rather than a rebuild.
What is ISO 9001:2026?
ISO 9001:2026 sets out the requirements for a quality management system. It helps organizations deliver products and services that consistently meet customer and regulatory requirements, and improve over time.
The new edition keeps the same clause structure as ISO 9001:2015. This is the Harmonized Structure shared by all ISO management system standards, such as ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, so integrated systems stay easy to manage.
What are the main changes in ISO 9001:2026?
The revision strengthens and clarifies existing requirements rather than introducing a new approach. The main changes are:
- A stronger role for leadership (clause 5.1). Top management must promote a quality culture and ethical behaviour, and create an environment where everyone contributes to the effectiveness of the system.
- A closer link to business strategy (clause 5.2). The quality policy is tied more explicitly to the organization's context and strategic direction. The system becomes a tool for reaching business objectives, not only for maintaining compliance.
- Risks and opportunities handled separately (clause 6.1). Both are still identified together, but actions to address risks and actions to pursue opportunities are now clearly distinct.
- Greater emphasis on people (clause 7.3). New awareness requirements mean people must understand the organization's quality culture and expected ethical behaviour.
- A new Annex A. It explains key concepts, terms and the intent behind the requirements. It adds no new requirements.
- Smaller refinements. Clause 3 now uses the shared management-system terms, the requirements for planning changes to the system (clause 6.3) are reinforced, and the former Annex B has been removed.
What stays the same?
The foundations of ISO 9001 do not change:
- Customer focus
- The process approach
- Risk-based thinking
- Continual improvement
The climate-change requirement added by the 2024 amendment also remains. Organizations must decide whether climate change is a relevant issue for their quality management system (clause 4.1) and recognise that interested parties may have climate-related requirements (clause 4.2).
What does the transition mean for certified organizations in Saudi Arabia?
- Three years to transition. Organizations certified to ISO 9001:2015 have three years to move to ISO 9001:2026. Your certification body will confirm the exact deadline.
- No new certification process. The transition is assessed within your existing certification cycle, and your certification body will agree the timing and type of audit with you.
- Your current certificate stays valid during the transition period.
- ISO 9001 is within TUV United Arabia's SAAC accreditation scope. We will contact our certified clients to agree the timing of their transition audit.
How can your organization prepare?
ISO recommends treating the transition as an opportunity to check that your system still supports the business. A typical sequence is:
- Understand the changes. Read the new edition and identify the clauses that affect you most.
- Review your current system. Compare your quality management system with the 2026 requirements and note where updates are needed.
- Update where necessary. Revise your quality policy, risk and opportunity actions, awareness programme and documented information.
- Brief your people. Make sure leaders and staff understand the changes and their role.
- Agree your transition timing with your certification body.
